Qur’an and Hadith as the primary religious texts in Islam attracted various scholarly studies all over the world. New insights and various ways of reading into these sources to discover meanings are unavoidable. Many interpretations of the Qur’an emerged from various perspectives from time to time and in different contexts.

Increasing attentions in a global context on Qur’an and Hadith studies are related to many challenges and debates in understanding these two sources. The Qur’anic teaching specifically accommodate ideas to a newly emerging Islamic societies in today’s context. Many approaches are proposed to open up major themes of Qur’an and Hadith studies either countering or accommodating the multifacet of globalization. Several issues are related to radicalization, technology, media, human rights, gender, environment and many others.

In global era, many assumed the decline of religion and to see religion as anti- technology, anti-media and anti-science. However, contrary to the facts, many religious community engage with media technology as an active users to spread religious messages while remain critical to it (Cambell, 2010).

Thus, todays understanding of the Qur’an and Hadith studies accommodate close appropriation of technology, media and science related to teachings, practices, and history of Muslims in different contexts and how the role of these primary texts in the life of Muslim globally (cf. Ouda, 2015). The discussions also include recent scholarships on Qur’an and hadith studies among Muslims as well as Western scholars interested in studying these two texts.

These multimedia presentations are useful tools in transforming the Quran and Hadith studies into a new concept. In addition, they can reach current generations who familiar with different types of information technology. Electronic version of Qur’an and Hadith can be viewed through numerous web sites from their texts, translations to exegesis.

The impact of these new presentation of primary Islamic sources are significant on how they are used and and understood in everyday life. The technology revolution introduces a new beginning to the study of Qur’an and Hadith in both ways: a challenge as well as opportunity. A callenge to be affected related to authority, content and source; while opportunity is related to wider access, distribution and multitude presentation. Besides, information technology can be a way of document preservation through internet connected link (Berg, 2001).


The Qur’an and hadith Studies Program, Ushuluddin Faculty, The State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, West Java, Indonesia invites scholars and researchers of all disciplines to participate in discussing this important history and development of interpretations and understanding of the two primary Islamic sources.

The theme of this conference is “Qur’an-Hadith Studies, Information Technology, and Media: Methods, Challenges and Opportunities” and covers the following topics, but not limited to:

3) Computational Program of Qur’an and Hadith Studies;

4) Qur’an and Hadith on Social Media;

5) Digitalisation of Qur’an and Hadith Manuscripts;

6) Emerging Technology in Qur’an and Hadith Braille;

7) Qur’an, Gender and Representation in Technology and Media;

8) Qur’an, Hadith and Popular culture;

9) Living Qur’an and Hadith in Accommodating Technology and Media;

10) Data Mining on Qur’an and Hadith Studies.

This conference is intended to bring together scholars and researchers from a variety of disciplines who pay particular attention to the history and current status of the idea of various issues of globalisation and the major themes derrived from the teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith in recent era particularly Indonesia, to share their knowledge and their finding research. The conference is also designedas an event where they can meet, create, and build an academic networking. Finally, the conference aims at producing a proceeding which is indexed by Scopus.

Time and Venue

The Conference will be held on October 2-4, 2018  at Ushuluddin Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
